Everything to Know About Thermage Skin Tightening

Alright, we get it. We are our own worst critics, am I right? Sometimes we look in the mirror and have our skin under a microscope. Are you noticing a shift in the quality of your skin? Do you feel like you’re noticing a little more loose skin or loss of skin laxity with age? At Rejuvenation MD Aesthetics & Vein Center in Asheboro and Greensboro, NC we have a non-invasive treatment available to help boost collagen production and tighten up the skin called Thermage.

What Is Thermage?

The Thermage system is a non invasive treatment for aging skin, unlike cosmetic surgery. It also uses different technology than laser treatment or CoolSculpting body contouring treatment.

Thermage uses Radiofrequency (RF) therapy to help smooth, tighten, and contour skin for an overall younger-looking appearance. It is a one-and-done treatment, meaning it is something you only do once a year and it delivers lasting results that continue to improve over time. The day you get your treatment is only the beginning, your skin continues to improve over the next few months as collagen stimulation continues. Thermage is a very comfortable treatment that takes around 90 minutes, depending on the patient and area treated, with little to no downtime.

So Why Does My Skin Sag and How Does Thermage Do Its Thing?

As we age, we lose collagen. What is collagen and what does it do? Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and is found in bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and cartilage. It provides structure and support to strengthen your skin especially. As we age our bodies produce less collagen and existing collagen breaks down rapidly. After the age of 30 collagen production decreases by 1% each year which contributes to crepey or sagging skin. Collagen can also decrease more rapidly due to environmental factors such as UV light exposure or smoking.

Thermage Skin Tightening uses Radiofrequency (RF) technology to heat the deepest layers of the skin while keeping the surface skin nice and cool so the treatment is overall very easily tolerated. This heat actually separates the collagen from other water molecules deep in the skin which causes a contraction resulting in instant skin tightening. Over time the healing process occurs as a response to this radiofrequency which causes new collagen to be deposited in the areas treated. This new collagen tightens and tones the skin even more over time, which is why we say the results just keep getting better and better. Continued improvement is seen for up to SIX months after treatment, which is why we only recommend a single treatment per year!

What Can You Expect When Coming in for a Thermage Skin Tightening Treatment?

Depending on the patient, and areas treated, the Thermage treatment takes around 90 minutes – 2 hours to complete. A special adhesive grounding pad is applied to the lower back or thigh. We cleanse the treatment area skin thoroughly then place a marking grid on the desired area. This grid helps us tailor the treatment to your anatomy and ensures a thorough treatment. During the treatment, a cool gel will be applied for comfort. This gel is sticky but effective! We use a generous amount of gel for your comfort, so wear a top you don’t mind getting some leftovers on! During the Thermage procedure, we will continue to ensure you are comfortable by having you provide feedback on the level of heat you are experiencing throughout. We will continue to make multiple passes over areas to give you a perfectly contoured look and to ensure the treatment is complete.

What Can You Expect After the Treatment?

Thermage is very well tolerated. Some patients experience temporary redness or minor swelling after treatment that goes away within 24 hours. You could have Thermage done, then go right back to work!

After Thermage, you can continue to use your Rejuvenation MD Aesthetics skincare routine, especially sunscreen! If you have any questions, Dr. Chaudhary can help ensure that your skin care products are okay to use and can answer any questions about if activities you have planned after the treatment are okay as well!
